Bala Yarns QLD – Week 1
Meanwhile at our Brendale, Queensland location, our new Program Manager Richard Monaei has officially kicked off “Bala’s Yarns” for 2026 Intensive Pathways Participants; launching its first session on 13 April at The Boss Boxing.
The energy in the room was powerful—this community‑led space filled every participant with hope, courage and a reminder of their own strength.
Founding Owner Sammy Leone set the tone with the question he gives every fighter before they step into the ring: “You have been given your sword and shield. It’s up to you — you can choose to fight or lay down and die.”
A message our young men carried with them long after they left the gym.
Running alongside the 12‑month Intensive Pathways Program, Bala’s Yarns brings together young men, Elders, community leaders and local organisations across 10 sessions over 20 weeks. The focus is simple but powerful: reconnect with cultural identity, strengthen connection to Country, and build the confidence needed to stay engaged and step into long‑term employment.
On 20 April, the group visited Kurbingui Youth and Family Development in Zillmere for a guided tour of their services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in North Brisbane. One staff member summed up the moment perfectly: “I have never seen a group of young men speak well and with so much confidence.”
Bala’s Yarns is already creating momentum — building pride, strengthening culture, and empowering our young men to rise. Bala’s Yarns will continue with its 3rd Session rolling out on Monday 27 April 2026. Watch this space for more updates 🤜 🤛 😋
