Young Bruthas ACT – Week 2

Week two of the Young Bruthas Healing Group began with a BBQ breakfast where participants worked together to cook and prepare bacon and egg rolls. Starting off the session this way let the group settle in and created a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

After breakfast, the group participated in a casual kick of the football, followed by a 30-minute game of touch football. On the surface, it seems simple, but this game of football helped encourage engagement, physical activity, teamwork, and building rapport among participants.

Following breakfast and footy, the participants were gathered in a circle for a group discussion focused on “Your mob”. Each participant was invited to share where they’re from and their connections and community. This exercise builds cultural identity, connection, and belonging.

After that, the Young Bruthas participants were asked to reflect on their mental health, self-care, healthy eating habits, reducing sugar, and the impact of their diet on their overall wellbeing.

The Indigenous Mental Health Worker for the Canberra region, Jie Birtch from Directions Health was also present to provide the group with an understanding of mental health, and how to identify your own triggers. He also shared strategies on managing mental health challenges and the importance of self-care.

During the session Worldview Foundation GM David Witham and Brendale Program Manager Richard Monaei were also present to provide more listening ears, mentoring, and connection for participants.

Like week one, week two was a resounding success – due in no little part to the efforts of the Young Bruthas participants, who were engaged, respectful, and eager to connect.
